❌ #Polystyrene packaging is almost never recycled in Europe - only 4,000 to 5,000 tons of the 100,000 produced each year are recycled, while the remainder are buried or burned. This is one of the biggest black holes of #plastic#recycling!
❌ An average French person generates an estimated 21 kgs of yogurt packaging per year!
So, what are we doing about it?
♻️ The French #PS25 Consortium of agri-food companies such as Yoplait, Andros and Lactalis announced on the 28th January 2022 the creation of a polystyrene recycling industry, with levers such as:
- financing the industry's scale-up;
- a buy-back guarantee on recycled polystyrene;
- improved #eco-design of packaging to better meet the specifications of recyclers.
🎯 This is an important step towards achieving 100% of recycled plastic by 2025, one of the key targets of the French Circular Economy Law introduced in 2020.
